Summer often ends too soon – especially when you’re working with the next wave of talented young professionals! We are so proud of all the interns accomplished and hope you enjoy this Q&A with a few of LLama Interns.

Chung Hoon received his bachelor’s degree in economics from University of Wisconsin-Madison. He received his master’s degree in data science from University of Michigan.

Why did you apply for the summer internship with LLamasoft?

I wanted to solve practical problems by applying data science techniques that I acquired during my degree. Being an applied research intern at LLamasoft provided the balance between problem-solving and practical-minded research problems. Also, LLamasoft was very interested in attracting talent who is focused on machine learning and data science.

How has the internship prepared you for your professional career?

Working in the Applied Research Department prepared me to understand the challenges in the industry. I worked with the demand and inventory teams to optimize their algorithms and apply machine learning algorithms to solve problems. The type of problems that I dealt were closely related to the customers. I came to understand customers value the efficiency and scalability of LLamasoft’s software.

What piece of advice would you have for future interns at LLamasoft?

Be open-minded. Try to pick projects that are out of your comfort zone. I really recommend applying to the Applied Research Department if you want to challenge yourself!

In researching how companies are approaching sustainability problems, I have learned so much about the shifts businesses and economies are going to be making in the coming years to deal with the climate crisis. Why did you apply for the summer internship with LLamasoft?

I first visited LLamasoft during the startup trek organized by University of Michigan’s Center for Entrepreneurship. I had the fortune to interact with Don Hicks, the founder of LLamasoft. Don’s passion for supply chain design and his innovative personality inspired me. I really liked the quirky and amicable people at LLamasoft. During the fall career fair, I saw LLamasoft’s booth and decided to stop by. I had a great conversation with Product Manager, Arad Adler at LLamasoft, on how the firm was revolutionizing the way companies design their supply chains. These interactions convinced me that LLamasoft will be a great place to learn, work and grow.

LLamasoft has given me to tools that I needed to start my career next year. I was able to get experience working in Salesforce, Pardot, WordPress and other software programs that are used daily in sales and marketing. I got a tremendous learning experience being able to work closely with both the sales and marketing team daily and get an inside look into how day-to-day operations run in their departments. The amount of experience I gained from this internship exceeded all my expectations and I feel a lot more prepared to start my professional career after this summer.

Don’t be afraid to reach out to other departments and ask if there are any shadowing opportunities this summer. Everyone at LLamasoft is more than glad to help you learn.
